Mohair SMALL TALK. Ear Candy This week’s NME rock heroes are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, last week it was Arctic Monkey, while Coldplay’s last album was described widely as a ‘masterpiece.’ Why do I mention this? Is it because such media hype has gone over-the-top mainstream, and in the process made heroes out of villains? Or is it because so much great talent gets overlooked in the stampede for column inches or TV/radio minutes? Well, it’s a bit of both really, but perhaps can explain why a band like Mohair, with four years touring under its belt, is under-hyped here in the UK…
Bell X1 FLOCK. Island Records Hoorah! The third album from the Dublin’s Bell X1 has arrived and what a joyous thing it is too. I have had the immense pleasure of seeing the Bell boys live on three occasions and it’s still a kick to hear songs debuted at gigs, in all their full new album glossiness. As established fans will know, Bell X1 named themselves after the first plane to break the sound barrier. Listening to ‘FLOCK‘ may cause a few breakages of its own, mainly from spinning around rooms in giddy delight.
Grandaddy JUST LIKE THE FAMBLY CAT. V2 When I first heard Grandaddy’s UNDER THE WESTERN FREEWAY it was like a sparkling breath of fresh musical air. It illustrated that there’s still room for an original and distinctive rock sound, and the album remains in my top twenty albums of all time. But it was just the beginning for a band that produced great album, after great album, and a string of memorable live performances. The band members are now going their separate ways, and JUST THE FAMILY CAT is the band’s moving and very beautiful swansong.

Morrissey RINGLEADER OF THE TORMENTORS. Attack With two albums in almost as many years, Morrissey seems to be back to stay, but it is crucial to attract new fans in a very competitive music market. This new album could increase his fan base, but probably won’t…
