Gemma Hayes Returns GEMMA HAYES DETAILS HER FIRST NEW ALBUM IN A DECADE: BLIND FAITH See Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RVnyz6teK4 SET FOR RELEASE 27 SEPTEMBER,THROUGH TOWNSEND MUSIC VIA ABSOLUTE LABEL SERVICES ON LP, CD, CASSETTE & DIGITAL FORMATS AND CONFIRMS UK HEADLINE TOUR Credit Rich Gilligan Mercury Prize-nominated singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes has shared details of her long-awaited sixth album BLIND FAITH, set for release on 27 September through Townsend Music via Absolute Label Services on LP, CD, cassette and digital formats. The Irish musician’s first new album since 2014’s BONES + LONGING is accompanied by a UK headline tour, including London’s Union Chapel on 28 September. Produced by Hayes with Karl Odlum, David Odlum & Brian Casey, BLIND FAITH features Lisa Hannigan on backing vocals on’Eye For An Eye’ and ‘Feed The Flames’, which she also co-wrote, while Paul Noonan duets with Gemma on ‘Another Love’. Having taken the time and space she needed to figure out what she wants to tell the world. Hayes has plenty to say, with BLIND FAITH diving into themes of longing, empowerment, freedom and repression. While Hayes’s songwriting is as personal as ever, its abstract nature allows the listener to sink into each song, immersed by tender guitar picking, eerie synths and swooning cello. It’s made all the more remarkable given this is Hayes’s first album in a decade. “I stopped writing for a long time, for many reasons, one of which was simply that I lost the urge to write,” she explains. Raising two young children, her energy was going elsewhere. “I found the first few years of motherhood really hard, so the idea that I could just get up on stage deserted me for a while. I lost my confidence, and I found myself not having a connection to music in any way. I went from talking about music every day, living and breathing music, to… I could go a month without music.” Then came the events of 2020, and a sudden relocation from London to West Cork. “We were living in a ground floor flat in Battersea, with just a patio and a brick wall, and then Covid hit, so we came back to Ireland. We literally upped-sticks and headed to Baltimore, West Cork, where my husband’s family had a little holiday house on the coast. And when we got there, I discovered it had a music room with a piano. So all of a sudden I found myself in this house, in the music room.” “Songs began to murmur, distil and rise up in my mind,” continues Gemma. “I would lock myself in the room, usually late at night when the world was asleep. I knew I needed to capture them before they left me. Some are about a weird restless longing that’s very hard to describe in words, some are about grief not just of loved ones but of places and moments past. Some are simply for the joy of playing and singing.” This is precisely what Hayes expresses on BLIND FAITH, those moments of pure exhilaration, despair, heartache or joy. She loses herself in the music, turns everything inside out, or else offers up moments of quiet and reflection. It is an extraordinary, career-defining work from one of Ireland’s most gifted and unique artists. Born in Munich in 1936, he studied art history and archaeology at university and worked as a photographer for Münchner Illustrierte and Kristall between 1960 and 1963. His job at Kristall took him reporting from all over the world. One of Hoepker’s early, major photo stories for them was made on a road trip across the USA and inspired by Robert Frank’s The Americans. Billboard and passengers on bus. He worked as cameraman and producer of documentary films for German television in 1972, and from 1974 collaborated with his second wife, the journalist Eva Windmoeller, first in East Germany and then in New York, where they moved to work as correspondents for Stern in 1976. From 1978 to 1981 Hoepker was director of photography for the American edition of Geo. Hoepker took one of the most memorable images of a singularly defining event in the history of the 21st century: a shot of young people relaxing on 9/11 as the World Trade Center burns behind them, which has come to symbolize much of the allegorical power of photography. Hoepker published it five years after the event - he had initially decided to hold back on sharing the image, wishing to respect the solemnity of the atmosphere immediately following the attacks, but it was the subject of much comment when he agreed to its use in a book about photographs of 9/11 in 2006. “Mr. Hoepker’s photo is prescient as well as important - a snapshot of history soon to come,” wrote Frank Rich in The New York Times. Though Hoepker had been an admirer of Erwitt’s work, he declined, as he was engaged in work with Stern. It was to be around two decades later, in 1989 that Hoepker would finally leave Stern and take on the opportunity to join Magnum, where he was to become president in 2003. On the subject of running an agency with his fellow photographers, he said, “It’s not easy, because we have to deal with big egos of big photographers. But it’s worth it.” Hoepker made a beloved series on a sports and pop-cultural titan, Muhammad Ali. Across two extraordinary visits to Ali in London and Chicago, Hoepker and his then-wife Eva Windmoeller followed the boxer as he prepared for a fight and trained on his home turf. Hoepker’s portrait of the fighter jumping atop a bridge on the Chicago River became iconic, but was the result of spontaneous improvisation between the two, rather than any premeditation. Hoepker reflected on Ali’s playful character: “Ali could be widely alert, sharp and observant, he loved to saunter down the streets, to banter with real people. He melted away when he saw children. They adored him, he hugged them, he did some shadow-boxing and then he took sudden naps in the backseat of his chauffeured Lincoln sedan.” Muhammad Ali, boxing world heavy weight champion showing off his right fist. The expanded CD and digital editions take in the original album, plus B-sides, unreleased demos and live versions and remixes from the likes of The Beloved, Way Out West, D.O.P, Youth and Masters At Work’s Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez. Marcy Levy (aka Marcella Detroit) has been forever immersed in music - writing, performing and producing music her entire life. After first conquering her hometown Detroit, Michigan (which would become her stage moniker), word quickly spread of Marcy’s abilities, and she would soon decamp first to Tulsa and then to Los Angeles to collaborate with a formidable and varied array of talents including her hero Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Belinda Carlisle, Bette Midler, Bob Seger and Chaka Khan. One of Marcy’s most fruitful working relationships would be with Eric Clapton, with whom she would tour (including a performance at 1985’s Live Aid) and record with over several years, co-writing one of his biggest hits, ‘Lay Down Sally’ and several of his other tracks including ‘The Core’, ‘Promises’ and ‘Tangled in Love’. Eventually settling back into LA in the late 80s, Marcy started writing towards her own project and was introduced by a mutual friend to Siobhan Fahey, who’d recently ensconced the UK and her former band Bananarama for sunnier climes, and their sessions together would eventually form into Shakespears Sister. Marcy’s extraordinary vocal range would prove the perfect foil to Siobhan’s deep dark tones. The ripples the band first caused at the end of the 80s turned into a huge splash in 1992 with their hit, ‘Stay’, which topped the UK single charts for 8 consecutive weeks - the longest run ever for a female band - and a top 5 worldwide. The monster success of ‘Stay’ and its accompanying video played into people’s (mis)conceptions of Marcella and Siobhan’s relationship - a chiaroscuro mix of high/low, angel/devil, Davis/Crawford rivalry - and in some ways, fed the pressure and expectations around the promotion and touring for the accompanying album HORMONALLY YOURS, eventually pushing the band to their curtain call. By 1993 Siobhan was ready to return to Los Angeles to spend time with her family. It was time for Marcy to step into the ring with a solo offering. Opting to stay on in London (which had become her adopted home during Shakespears Sister’s busy years) she set to work with esteemed producer Chris Thomas (Sex Pistols, The Beatles, U2). Pulling together a crack team of musicians and some notable guests (including Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, Jools Holland on organ and guitarist James “Sparks” Sinclair) they set up base at Olympic Studios and set to work on the folio of songs Marcy had amassed. The resultant album was appropriately titled JEWEL, a sparkling showcase not only of Marcy’s considerable vocal talents, but her versatility as a writer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist. JEWEL’s bold strokes traverse everything from stirring pop-balladry of ‘I Believe’, to the leftfield funk of ‘Cool People’ and ‘Perfect World’, and operatic melodrama of ‘Art of Melancholy’ and ‘Prima Donna’, Marcy’s pitch-perfect delivery always upfront and centre stage. Released in March 1994, JEWEL enjoyed considerable success in the UK, three of its singles going Top 40, including a duet with none other than Sir Elton John on a rendition of the Motown classic ‘Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing’.
