Blues Explosion DAMAGE. Mute If you like the blues and rock, this album is definitely for you! Not since the release of Doyle Bramhall II’s fabulous album WELCOME back in 2000, have I enjoyed a rock/blues album as much. Formerly The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the band consists of Jon Spencer with drummer Russell Simins and guitarist Judah Bauer. However, there are numerous other instrument players (sax, trumpet, congas, synth, Hammond, etc. etc.) used on the album. The title track, Damage, open the album with in the most devastatingly explosive way. It’s a death march of a track with solemn drum beats, and breathtaking choruses. The song ends on a raw drum rant with the word ‘damage’ punctuating the angry passage. It’s a stunner… but it’s only the beginning. Next track, Burn It Off, is more upbeat with a relentless and raw vibe underpinned by soaring guitar riffs and a screaming vocal. Then things slow almost to a crawl with the beautiful and deathly Spoiled. Echoed solo voice with old blues style female vocal backing, the rumbling sound of congas and shrill guitars make this my album favourite. Crunchy is out and out rock/blues complete with thumped piano notes and a raw vocal that dominates the song. The following anti-war track Hot Gossip goes further down the blues route complete with harmonica, sad drum beats, mournful guitar and a slow-moving vocal. The album is full of good songs, great instrumental sounds and vocals that loiter with intent. Mars, Arizona is another highlight with its superb guitar riffs and distant voice – fabulous! 4/5
